After a week off from PLA action, OCFC took the field in Royal Oak on Sunday. The matchup against Division leaders RWB Adria proved to be a tough test, and the Purple and Gold fought til the last second, but lost by a score of 3-2.
The scoring got underway quickly, and in the 3rd minute Shawn Sloan put a shot past the RWB Adria keeper off of a Talal Hamodi pass. This score held steady until the 27th minute, when Qudus Lawal of RWB Adria beat GK Zach Walker and leveled the score. Things began to get a bit chippy between the two sides in the 34th minute, when Talal Hamodi was issued a yellow card for his challenge on an RWB Adria attacker (1 of 6 yellow cards issued in the match). Two minutes later, RWB Adria’s Uzi Tayou managed to get enough of a foot on a ball played into the box to flick it over the head of Zach Walker and the ball found its way just inside of the far post to take a 2-1 lead for the visitors.
This score held well into the second half, despite some electric attacking play from Javier Steinwasher, who manufactured a few chances for himself throughout the half. In the 62nd minute, captain Kaveon Dux was taken down in the box by an Adria defender, and OCFC was awarded a penalty. Javier Steinwasher took the penalty for the Purple and Gold, and calmly placed it in the back of the net to tie the match at 2-2. The two sides traded chances for the next 27 minutes, with no success for either side until the 89th minute when RWB Adria’s Taylor Bond chipped the ball over GK Ludin Gonzales, who came on for Zach Walker at half. The score of 3-2 held through extra time, and OCFC lost in heartbreaking fashion. RWB Adria maintained their winning form, notching their 5th win in their 6 games on the year, and OCFC dropped their second match in a row.
